Coach Phelps has been coaching for over thirty years, and twenty of those years at Capistrano Unified School District. Coach Phelps has coached for Jr. All American football in Mission Viejo in 1990 for 8 years and started coaching Track & Field at Dana Hills High School from 2000 to 2013 and helped lead Dana Hills to four straight Orange County Championships titles and has coach many individuals to CIF State Championships. Coach Phelps joined Tesoro High School in 2013 as the Head Coach for Cross Country and led the Titans to its first state appearance at the CIF State Championships in 2013 and 2014. Coach Phelps has guided his teams to 6 CIF Cross Country Finals appearances. Coach Phelps took over the Head Coach of Track & Field in 2015 and has led his teams to league Champions and coached many individuals to CIF State Championships. In 2019 four Tesoro Alumni had competed at the NCAA Division 1 National Cross Country Championships.
